Volunteering is fun!

2019 Willow River Trail Challenge – October 12, 2019

from the 2016 Willow River Trail Challenge by Terry Butler

For the last few years, Fred Sobottka has led a group of our members to capture the Willow River Trail Challenge.  The challenge is an event sponsored by the Friends of Willow River and Kinnickinnic State Parks.  This event helps to fund resources for nature enterpretive, scientific, historical, recreational, educational and related visitor service.  In 2016 it was a lot of fun, especially covering the kid’s races.

This year’s day is Saturday, October 12, 2019. Tasks basically fall into an early shift and a late shift, or stay the whole time. We can all expect to be on our way home around noon. That means that, even if you sign up for the entire event, you will have plenty of Saturday left for other things.

The volunteer signup has been streamlined. Just name the time of day you prefer, or select both. In the comment section, let me know if you have a certain task in mind or if you have any particular restrictions or requirements. Be sure to indicate a t-shirt size. We offer uni-sex shirts and women’s and youth sizes.

Phipps Performing Arts

“Population 365” dress rehearsal by Bryan Leonard

A small group of our members have signed up to capture archival and production photos for various performing arts production.  Most recently, Bryan Leonard and Matt Then captured photos of the dress rehearsal for “Population 485”.  They’ve not only been challenged by something new, but it has been a way for giving back to the Phipps for being our home for meetings.

Mike Chrun Follow-up

Thanks to Mike Chrun for the great presentation he made at the September 18 meeting on “Winter Photography on the North Shore.”  I tried taking notes with only a small scrap of paper – in the dark, so I suspect I missed a lot.  He included so much on locations, timing, equipment and resources, that he far exceeded my expectations.   Over a year ago, he wrote an article for the St. Croix Camera Club on the subject and if you want to check it out click on this link.  Mike organized the St. Croix Camera Club almost five years ago, and is president.
