May Was a Busy Month for the Club

May 11 Meeting at the Phipps

This meeting was the first one held at the Phipps in over two years.  Steve was at the helm of this hybrid meeting, both at the Phipps and using Zoom. The highlights of the meeting came from members of the club who shared information about salon images that recently scored tens.  Carl Wegener explained, rather humorously, the capture details of a Bull Nose snake.  He was followed by Marianne Diericks with her migrating monarch butterflies on blazing star flowers.  Marianne gave a lot of capture and processing tips and shared the location.  Melissa Anderson shared the story behind her favorite mammal, the cheetah and cub captured on a trip to Kenya.  Rebecca VanDyk told us about the creative process behind her crabapple blossoms photo.  That included her taking a class online for painting in Photoshop and the use of a Wacom tablet.

May 15 Lunar Eclipse

Members of the club met at Weitkamp Park in Hudson to capture, first the moonrise and then the total lunar eclipse.  A gallery is here.

Member in the Spotlight Update

Last November, one of Jay Olson-Goude’s photos of Maiden Rock Bluff in the fall will represent the state of Wisconsin in the Postal Service release of it Mighty Mississippi stamp collection.  The Mighty Mississippi stamps and related products are now available for preorder on the USPS website.

May 25 Moving in Closer – Advanced Macro

Steve Gettle hosted this Zoom program which, indeed, showed techniques of moving in closer, much closer.  Though the program wasn’t recorded, detailed notes were sent to participants.  He also has this video on his YouTube channel that covers some of the same information.  And it’s timely for this time of year.

Galleries are Updated!

The competition year for N4C was just completed and the gallery of winners for April and May are here and here.  All 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place and Honorable Mentions will be judged in September for the “Best of the Best” year-end awards. The Phipps asked if our members would be willing to photography headshots, promotional photos and archive/production photos.  This has been a fun way of giving back and at the same time, some free entertainment.  That gallery has also been updated here.
