Layne Kennedy

On Wednesday November 4th, Layne will make an in-person program, “The life of a Photographer. Such a topic leaves room for many directions to be explored, both the artistic ones and business ones. It also leaves people seeking answers.  Before the meeting we should come up with a list of questions that Layne can address.

Educated in fine art photography, Layne Kennedy is known for his editorial photography that conveys a strong sense of place. His images are featured in magazines worldwide on subjects as varied as Pink Dolphins in the Amazon River to traveling with Polar Inuit hunters by dogsled.

His feature work appears  in Smithsonian, LIFE, Audubon, Islands,  Sports Illustrated, Terre Sauvage, Nature Conservancy, Newsweek , National Geographic Traveler, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Outdoor Explorer, GEO, Forbes,  Business Week and other magazines.

He has contributed to numerous books for several publishers, including the National Geographic Society, The Nature Conservancy, W.W. Norton, NorthWord Press, Lerner, Sterling,  Knopf Greystone, Rodale, Insight Guides, McMillan, Invisible Press, Discovery, and  Voyageur Press. He photographed a book on Great Lakes States for the National Geographic Society. Another book on the Apostle Islands Jewels On The Water-Lake Superior’s Apostle Islands. 

He completed a book titled Minnesota; Now & Then for Voyageur Press and his newest book, A Hard Water World-Ice Fishing And Why We Do It hit the shelves in October 2008. Another book, PADDLE NORTH-Canoeing The Boundary Waters/Quetico Wilderness for the Minnesota Historical Society Press is now out on the shelves and LIGHT OVER ICELAND can be found on Blurb.com featuring personal images of Iceland.

Kennedy’s newest book;  BEYOND THE LIGHT-The Stories Behind The Photographs is a photographic marvel.  With magnificent printing by Brilliant Graphics, in Exton, PA., one of the country’s best printers of photography, contains a myriad of Color and B/W photographs spanning nearly five decades of Editorial and Fine Art Photography.

His image files are diverse with collections featuring the Great Plains, Iceland, Greenland, Amazon River, the Caribbean, North American fossils & dinosaurs, Wind Power, North American Ecosystems, Wildflowers, Amber, Finland, American Prairie, Desert SW, Grand Canyon, White-Water Rafting, Great Lakes States, Alaska, Wolves and Wolf Research, Dogsledding, Conservation, to name a few.

A frequent speaker at events and workshops, Layne has been teaching photography for more than 30 years. He currently teaches with the NIKON Mentor Series, North House Folk School, Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge,  and his own Worldwide Photo Tours including tours to Italy, Cuba, Portugal Iceland, Costa Rica  and Kenya.

His photographs are represented by his office in Minneapolis, and Getty in New York City.
