Ted gave a very informative presentation about flash lighting. He covered the capabilities and limits of the pop-up flash, speedlights and off-camera flash. He also demonstrated the useful but inexpensive devices like reflectors, diffusers, light stands, gels, wireless remotes and the mysterious “black foam thing.” His presentation included demonstrations of the flashes and various techniques to bounce the light, and he displayed the images he took in real time with the projector. Special thanks to Ted’s daughters who modeled, assisted Ted during his presentation, and even baked Terry delicious cupcakes for her birthday. There was too much information and not enough time, so Ted has been asked to present a longer, more detailed presentation sometime in the future.
I want to Thank our illustrious Past President Michael Waterman for leading the meeting while I was off entertaining family!
Terry has organized an outing on Saturday, August 17 to the Minnesota State Capitol. Meet in the parking lot across the street from the Phipps at 9:00 am to carpool. Tripods are allowed inside the capitol. A major construction project starts in September, so this will be the last opportunity for a while to capture the interior of the building construction-free.
And we have another photo meet-up scheduled for 6:30 PM Wednesday August 28th at the LeFever Horse Training Center (this side of Roberts). They have horses, goats, chickens, etc. Should be a fun opportunity to get some great close up shots of beautiful animals. More info to follow in the next post. Mark it down!
The River Alliance of Wisconsin is sponsoring a photography contest. HERE is a link to more information – a worthy cause!
Main camera/gear: I shoot with a Canon 7D. My favorite lens is a Canon 2.8 70-200mm from the L series. My other favorite lenses are a Sigma 105mm and a 17-70mm. I also have a Sigma 400mm and a Canon 300mm but I find I don’t use them as often now that I’ve been spoiled by the quality and the speed of my 200mm.
Favorite Editing Software: My main editing software is Photoshop CS4 which I have a love/hate relationship with. I was about to upgrade but then Photoshop went to the Cloud so my upgrade is on hold for now.
What is your specific background or interest in photography? My interest in photography started about 12 years ago. I am a bird lover and I had “birdscaped” our yard to draw a larger variety of birds. Once I had the birds coming I decided I wanted to photograph them. I ended up being bit by the shutter bug which as it turns out bites even harder than the birding bug and the rest as they say is history. That was 4 cameras and a multitude of accessories ago.
Favorite subject matter to photograph: My favorite subjects to photograph are birds especially hummingbirds, butterflies and I also really like to shoot fireworks.
In what areas do you want to learn more about or improve your photography? I would like to learn more about using my external flash. I really enjoyed the tutorial at the last meeting and I would like to learn more. I would also like to learn more about Photoshop. I know just enough to get by but that just scratches the surface.
I enjoy being a member of WWPC because: I’ve been a member of the WWPC for a year now and I’ve really enjoyed getting together with others who share my passion. It’s a great group and I always take something away from our meetings. We have a lot of very talented members and I think it’s wonderful that they are willing to share their knowledge the way they do.
